Hakata Doll
By Nobumasa Kunisaki
H.34cm
"Hagoromo" is one of the greatest works. Particularly, the highlight "Wagoh no Mai" (the Dance of Harmony) is very intriguing. A story is evolved between "Waki" (a supporting actor) and "Shite" (a leading actor). The Waki is a fisherman living near beautiful pine shore of Miho and he is called "Hakuryu" (White Dragon); the Shite is the goddess of Heaven with an atmosphere of a fairy.
Some fishermen are walking along the pine shore of Miho, and one of them finds a beautiful robe hanging from the branch of a pine tree. A goddess asks him to return it, explaining that it is a feather robe from Heaven. When the goddess tells him that she is unable to ascend again to Heaven without the robe, he is so moved by her distress that he agrees to return it if she will dance for him. After some negotiations and persuasions, the goddess is overjoyed at putting it on again and begins to dance (the Dance of Harmony). At last she disappears up to Heaven among the mists and clouds, calling down blessings on our land.
