The Japanese name of this work “To-ryumon” is came from Chinese legend. The word “To” means climb or swim up, “Ryu-mon” originally means place name but also means the dragon gate.
In the old days, no fish other than a carp could swim up a waterfall of Yellow River, and by doing so people believed the carp became a dragon. In other words, although it is difficult to overcome great trouble or challenge, if you do overcome it, you will be successful in life.
In this work, the carp is cited in the center, and a dragon is drew on the back of vase.
