Hakata Kyogen Doll
by Hideaki Shirouzu
H.17.5cm

The first challenging role for many young “Kyogen” performers is that of the monkey in this play.
When a lord and his servant were returning from hunting, he met a monkey being led by its trainer. The lord demands that the trainer kill it and give the lord the monkey's skin, which he intends to use to make a new arrow-quiver. Although the trainer was reluctant to kill the monkey that he has reared with his own hands, he is threaten by the load with arrow. So he tried to kill his monkey with his club, but the innocent monkey does mimicry that rows the paddle of the boat with the club which was taught recently. This pitiful acting of monkey makes trainer wail. The load is also felt pitiful, he changes his mind and stopped to kill the monkey.
