Making Process of Hakata doll

1. Clay Refinement: This is composed of eight steps: dig clay from the suburbs of Fukuoka (Hakata), procurement, clay drying clay crushing, clay elutriation, clay re-drying, clay sitting, and clay kneading
2. Prototype Making: This is composed of the seven steps as well: planning, designing, clay kneading, posing, detailed curving, final establishment and refinement before the completion of prototype
3. Mould Making: There are two mould-making ways: plaster pushing way and plaster pouring way. There is also a process, requiring no mould-making process, especially in case of making only a single work.
4. Clay Pasting: This process requires the pasting of well-kneaded clay on the plaster mould.
5. Firing: Although wood fired kilns were used up until about 1955, now the dolls are fired in electric or gas fired kilns to a temperature of around 900°C to 1000°C.
6. Painting: The face is painted with The pigment of which made from ground oyster shells (Gofun). Colour is then applied to the kimono, obi and pattern in that order. Several other techniques are used to decorate some dolls. Besides using gold leaf and thickly applied paint, another technique involves the application of gold, which is then burnished with a hard enamel such as that of a dog's tooth.
7. Facial Features: This is a final process of Hakata doll making and it is a tense moment as the artist applies the facial features. Bringing a life to the doll.
8. Completion: After a final inspection, a Hakata doll is completed.
