Although “Haimurubushi” is a Japanese word, most of Japanese would notunderstand the meaning of the word. The word, “Haimurubushi” comes from Okinawa accent means the Southern Cross. Okinawa is southern island of Japan, was an independent country called “Ryukyu” till 200 years ago. It was a key island of East China Sea for China, South Asia countries, Japan and even western countries.
This doll is made on the background of Okinawa’s history, her clothes are not typical Japanese one, but mixture of Chinese clothes. The colour of her clothe, blue , is taken from the symbol colour of Okinawa kimono, called Ryukyu Tumugi.
She holds a men’s comb in her hand, and praying to the Southern Cross for safety of her husband, fish man.
